As the weekends roll around I often hear the phrase, "There's nothing to do in Tomball or Magnolia on the weekends." Well, I'm here to tell you, that simply isn't true - mostly. Each week I will try my best to find at least five things families and adults can do. So here we go:
1. Stop by the Celest Graves Education Support Center, 31141 Nichols Sawmill Rd., in the Magnolia school district and check out our future brains. From 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 the best of the best junior high and high school science fanatics will display their Brain power. It is the culminating event of campus science fairs at the school district level. The projects are to actually be judged the day before. Saturday, the school district will open its doors so parents, family and friends can see exactly what these teens have been up to behind those closed doors for the past several months. First, second and third place winners will be announced as well as the Best Of Show at 11 a.m.
2. It isn't all about the science geeks, Magnolia also has it going on in the fine arts department. Both high schools will produce musicals this weekend. First, head over to the district's original high school - at Magnolia High School, 14350 FM 1488
- and check out "Cinderella," the Rogers and Hammerstein classical musical. The shows will be held Jan. 29, 30, 31 and Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. A matinee will be held Jan 31 at 2 p.m. Tickets, $10 for adults and $7 for children under 10 can be purchased online at www.magnoliadrama.com. Adults, get those tickets beforehand or pay an extra $2 ($12 for those who failed math) at the door. MHS students, don't sweat, you only have to pay $8 for advance tickets. Guys, it is a musical, but you girl may appreciate you taking her out for dinner and a classic.
3. But that isn't the only musical in town. Magnolia West High School's Fine Arts Department is producing "Bye By Birdie," the musical about a rock and roll singer who is drafted into the army. Another classic, that may help keep guys in their seats. The production will be held Jan. 30 and 31 at 7 p.m. with a Jan. 31 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets are $8 for students and senior citizens and $15 for adults. MWHS is located at 42202 FM 1774.
4. That is three down. Whew! Next up, the Tomball High School FFA Project Show and Sale will be held Friday, Jan. 30 from 3 to 10 p.m. at the Ag Barn and will continue Saturday, Jan. 31 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with show and sale as well as a buyers barbecue at the Ag Barn and in the high school's commons area. Tomball high is located at 30330 Quinn Rd. Bring some cash and bid on some cattle, or chickens, or pigs...
5. Drum roll, please.... For some blues music, head over to Main Street Crossing in Tomball to hear Clay Melton, of Cypress, perform along with Kaitly Knippers. The venue is open to all ages and the cover charge is only $5. Melton was inspired to play the guitar when he was 11 years old after hearing Hendrix preform Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower." He broke into the Houston music scene last year (that is 2008 for those who still can't believe it is actually 2009) and has since been traveling between Houston and Austin for performances. In September, Melton was invited to perform at a Hurricane Ike Recovery gathering in Houston and wrote "Ike Shuffle," just for the occasion. His first CD is to come out this year. Want to hear some of his songs before heading out to the venue, head on over to www.mainstreetcrossing.com and click the "Music" tab for a list of upcoming performances. Under the Jan. 31 date listing, you will be able to not only hear some of Melton's songs, but see some of his photos, including him as a kid (everybody say, "Awwwww.") You'll also find directions and phone number for more information about the music venue.
Can you believe it? There are five fun things to do, on the cheap, I might add, for a nice weekend in the Tomball/Magnolia area. Lets see what I can find for you to do next weekend in next week's 5 Things to Do blog posting.
